It’s not just wasted spend – unverified audiences are corrupting your marketing strategy

When pharmaceutical marketers talk about the cost of unverified HCP audiences, the conversation usually centres on wasted spend. And rightly so – with budget waste estimated at up to 47% on some platforms, the direct financial impact is substantial.

But there is a second, less visible consequence that may ultimately be more damaging: the corruption of the data that underpin strategic decision-making.

The engagement rate illusion

Consider this scenario. A £120,000 multi-touch nurture campaign targets 15,000 cardiologists across four touchpoints. The campaign reporting comes back showing a 4.2% engagement rate. The marketing team reviews the results and concludes the channel is underperforming. Budget is reallocated. The channel is deprioritised.

What the reporting didn’t show, was that 40% of the 15,000 cardiologists were inactive accounts. The real active audience was 9,000. Recalculated against the true verified audience, the engagement rate was actually 7% – a strong performance by any measure.

A high-performing channel was cut. Not because it was failing, but because the data it was measured against were wrong.

The cascade effect

This is not an isolated risk. When audience verification standards are inconsistent, every metric downstream is compromised. Engagement rates are deflated. Conversion data are distorted. Channel performance comparisons are skewed. And the strategic decisions that flow from those metrics – budget allocations, channel mix, content strategy, brand planning – are built on foundations that were never accurate.

The consequences extend across the business:

  • Indirectly: delayed commercial outcomes and loss of competitive advantage as campaigns fail to generate the expected return
  • Organisationally: erosion of executive confidence in digital channels, leading to budget cuts in areas that are actually performing well
  • For future brand plans: poor results attributed to unverified audiences are often misdiagnosed as failures of creative strategy or content – triggering costly, unnecessary reworking of assets that were never the problem

In each case, the root cause is the same: the audience data were compromised from the start.

Why this matters more in pharma than in other sectors

In most digital advertising contexts, some degree of audience imprecision is an accepted cost of doing business. In pharmaceutical marketing, the stakes are considerably higher.

HCP-targeted campaigns operate in tightly regulated environments, with content approved specifically for doctor audiences. The cost of developing and approving that content is substantial. The therapeutic areas being promoted are often highly specialised, with small, precisely defined target audiences – a few thousand oncologists, a specific cohort of cardiologists, a defined group of GPs managing a particular condition.

In these contexts, audience accuracy is not a nice-to-have. It is the entire basis on which the campaign’s commercial viability rests. A 40% inactive audience doesn’t just waste 40% of the budget – it invalidates 40% of the data the campaign generates.

The strategic value of verified audiences

The inverse is also true. When campaigns run against genuinely verified, active audiences, the data they generate are reliable. Engagement rates reflect real doctor behaviour. Conversion metrics are meaningful. Channel performance comparisons are valid. And the strategic decisions that follow are built on solid ground.

This is the less-discussed value of gold-standard audience verification – not just the budget it saves, but the quality of the intelligence it produces. For pharmaceutical marketers making high-stakes decisions about where to invest, which channels to prioritise and how to interpret campaign performance, the difference between verified and unverified audience data is the difference between insight and noise.

The question to ask

Before your next campaign, ask your platform one simple question: if I remove all inactive and unverified accounts from my quoted reach, what does my engagement rate actually look like?

If they can’t (or won’t) answer it, that tells you everything you need to know about the quality of the data your campaigns are generating.
